We all have the responsibility to employ social control in social media. Yes, everyone can upload any picture, any video they want. But, it does not mean that we can’t [or shouldn’t] protest if the content of such pictures or videos are inappropriate.
Most people don’t know how to do it (protesting disturbing pictures/videos they found at facebook), or worse, they didn’t bother to do so, they simply don’t care. This ignorance will lead us to bigger problem: more disturbing pictures/videos will become more and more common because people [falsely] led to believe that it is okay. Well, it is NOT okay!
So next time, if you see someone share inappropriate or disturbing pictures/videos on facebook, please take action! Do not do nothing, here’s what you can do:
- Click the picture, on the lower right corner you can click “Option” and choose “report photo”
- Facebook will ask you about what’s wrong with the picture. You can choose one option you think closest to the reason of your objection. Each option you choose may lead you to choose among more specific reasons. Choose wisely and objectively.
- At the end, you’ll be prompted to submit the report to facebook, block, unfollow, unfriend tor simply send message to the person who share that picture on facebook (to state your objection and request them to take the picture down). In my opinion, at the very least you should do two things: submit the report to facebook AND send a message to the person.
Whether you’re going to block, unfollow or even unfriend them it is yours to decide, think wisely before you do any of this because your choice could affect your relationship. Also keep in mind that there’s a possibility that the person’s account is hacked and other people post the disturbing picture on behalf of his/her name. Bottom line, social control in social media is our responsibility, we should take proper action whenever it is necessary. It is our duty to care, to ignore is not an option.
